The engines still appeared to be on, the air was still running, and the lift opened and closed, but there was no light from any of the consoles or the deck itself.

Vas turned toward Bathie’s spot. “Cut engines now. We can’t see crap and there’s a lot of bad things in here.” Then she hit her comm to the rest of the ship. “Does anyone have power?” The comm system was separate from the main ship systems so hopefully if they were down it wouldn’t be.

“Medical here, Captain,” Perla responded. “We have no lights, but the rest of the systems are working. Life support, doors, I can even hear the keys on the monitor when I type things in, I just can’t see anything.”

One by one the other sectors all checked in the same. Things were working, just no lights.

She’d always said Deven had eyes like a feline, and he demonstrated that now by walking to her console without swearing once. “I’d almost say it’s us and not the ship, but I can see outlines and I’m sure if Hrrru were here he could as well.”

“Okay, that might have been me,” Marli said over the comms. “I thought I’d fixed this…damn thing…nope.” She cut off again.

“Marli, if you’re responsible for our lights going out, you need to fix it now. We’re in the Web and are blind.”

“But I can fix this, really.”

“Stop it. You said you’d follow my command—I am ordering you to un-do whatever it was you did.”

Silence followed, but one by one the light systems came back on. They’d been right; everything was still working, there was just nothing to illuminate it. How in the hell did trying to fix that twice-cursed people mover end up removing every bit of light?

Vas was going to ask then shook her head. Better not to know. “Get back up on deck, Marli.”

“I can go see what she did, Deven said, but Vas shook him off.

“As long as everything is back, let’s just leave it alone. I’m going to need you to help get us through the Web.”

He laughed and went back to his station. “I thought you had the Web figured out?”

“More people working on it the better,” Vas said and turned back to her console.

Nebulas were messy, odd things. Each one seemed to have different aspects designed to mess up ships trying to cross them. Had they gone through the Szan Nebula the long way, Vas was certain they would have seen far more of these aspects—and she was really hoping that second cruiser was going through them now. But the Web was unique. There were rumors that it was the residue of the final battle against the Asarlaí. Aside from the rumor, no one knew how it was formed; it had just appeared. Mystics stated it was the remains of the great deity who created all. Of course, the most devoted of them felt the need for pilgrimages. These usually ended up being one-way, which did cut down on the religions that worshipped it.
